Managed MongoDB on Hetzner and UpCloud
BasePilot provisions and operates MongoDB replica sets on the European cloud providers Hetzner and UpCloud, in your own cloud account or on your own servers, from Germany. The MongoDB engine is currently offered as a beta.
Operated from Germany. Billed per node and hour. No minimum term.

What managed MongoDB includes
Specific to MongoDB. Monitoring, maintenance windows, access control and hourly billing come with every cluster.
Always a replica set
Every cluster is a replica set, single-node clusters included, so multi-document transactions and change streams work from the start.
Drivers follow the primary
The connection string lists every node of the replica set. Drivers discover the members, follow the primary through a failover and can read from secondaries.
Failover decided by the platform
With two or three nodes BasePilot promotes a secondary when the primary fails and rebuilds the failed node. A two-node cluster stays writable while its secondary is down.
Users with roles per database
Users authenticate with SCRAM and receive read, read-write or owner rights, for a single database or for all of them.
Oplog access
Users with access to all databases can read the oplog, for example for Meteor's MONGO_OPLOG_URL.
mongosh in the browser
The query studio accepts mongosh syntax and shows results both as a table and as documents.
Built and operated in Europe
BasePilot is a German service on European infrastructure. You decide in which data centre each cluster runs.
- Operator in Germany
- BasePilot is developed and operated in Erfurt, Germany. Contracts are governed by German law.
- European cloud providers
- The servers come from Hetzner (Germany) and UpCloud (Finland). You choose the data centre location for every cluster yourself, for example in Germany or Finland.
- Data processing under the GDPR
- We process the data in your databases solely on your behalf and on your instructions. A data processing agreement under Art. 28 GDPR is available on request.
- Analytics only with consent
- This website measures visits only if you agree; without your consent it sets no cookies. The console uses only technically necessary cookies.
Questions about managed MongoDB
Short answers on versions, operation and limits.
- Which MongoDB versions does BasePilot offer?
- MongoDB 8, 7. New clusters use MongoDB 8.0 by default.
- Do clients need a certificate to connect?
- TLS is required on every connection, but clients need no certificate of their own. Download the cluster's CA certificate and pass it to the driver as tlsCAFile.
- Does managed MongoDB support point-in-time restore?
- Not at present. Backups are full mongodump archives taken on your schedule; a restore returns to the moment of a dump and always creates a new cluster.
- What does beta mean for MongoDB?
- The MongoDB engine is provided for evaluation: it may still contain defects and may change. We recommend not using it for business-critical data yet.

BasePilot operates these engines in the same way.
