# Managed MySQL on Hetzner and UpCloud

> Managed MySQL from a German provider: GTID replication, failover, mandatory TLS and scheduled backups on Hetzner, UpCloud or your own servers.

BasePilot provisions and operates MySQL clusters on the European cloud providers Hetzner and UpCloud, in your own cloud account or on your own servers, from Germany. Operated from Germany. Billed per node and hour. No minimum term.

## MySQL at a glance

- Versions: 8.4
- Default version: MySQL 8.4 LTS
- Port: 3306
- Nodes per cluster: 1 to 3
- Replication: GTID-based replication, asynchronous
- Backups: Scheduled dumps of all databases and user accounts
- Point-in-time restore: No
- Major version upgrades: No
- Availability: Generally available
- Connection string: `mysql://app@shop-x7k2f.mysql.basepilot.de:3306/defaultdb`

## What managed MySQL includes

- **GTID replication and failover:** Replicas are built from a consistent copy of the primary and follow it with GTID-based replication. If the primary fails, BasePilot promotes the replica that has applied the most transactions and points the others at it.
- **TLS on every connection:** Unencrypted TCP connections are refused. Every cluster has its own certificate authority so clients can verify the server; alternatively, you upload your own certificate.
- **Sized for the node:** The InnoDB buffer pool and the connection limit are set to match the memory of the size you choose.
- **Users and databases:** Users are SQL accounts with read-only, read-write or admin rights, for all databases or for individual ones.
- **Scheduled backups:** Consistent dumps of every database, including routines, events, triggers and the user accounts, are stored in object storage and can be restored into a new cluster.
- **SQL in the browser:** The query studio runs SQL and browses tables. Sessions are read-only until you switch writing on.

## Built and operated in Europe

BasePilot is a German service on European infrastructure. You decide in which data centre each cluster runs.

- **Operator in Germany:** BasePilot is developed and operated in Erfurt, Germany. Contracts are governed by German law.
- **European cloud providers:** The servers come from Hetzner (Germany) and UpCloud (Finland). You choose the data centre location for every cluster yourself, for example in Germany or Finland.
- **Data processing under the GDPR:** We process the data in your databases solely on your behalf and on your instructions. A data processing agreement under Art. 28 GDPR is available on request.
- **Analytics only with consent:** This website measures visits only if you agree; without your consent it sets no cookies. The console uses only technically necessary cookies.

## Questions about managed MySQL

### Which MySQL versions does BasePilot offer?

MySQL 8.4. New clusters use MySQL 8.4 LTS by default.

### Does managed MySQL support point-in-time restore?

Not at present. Backups are consistent dumps taken on your schedule, and a restore returns to the moment of a dump. Point-in-time restore is available for PostgreSQL and libSQL.

### Is replication synchronous?

No. Replication is asynchronous, so transactions that had not yet reached a replica can be lost in a failover.
